Children from orphanages and boarding schools are being evacuated from Donetsk, on Friday, amid high tensions.

The children were seen leaving their homes and schools and boarding buses.

“We don’t tell the kids that [it is evacuation], because they won’t understand. They just think, as I said before, that we are taking them on some kind of sightseeing trip or maybe to some recreation centre. Then, when we drive up, maybe we’ll tell them on the spot,” said Raisa Prilipko, Director of Donetsk Children’s Home No. 1.

She added she is not informed where the children would be evacuated to.

Earlier, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin announced civilians’ evacuation to Russia in order to avoid getting caught in the crossfire in case Ukraine starts an attack.

Kiev and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics have accused each other of ceasefire violations and shelling in recent days.

The USA and other Western countries have expressed fears that Russia could stage a false flag attack to justify invading Ukraine, amid reports that Moscow has concentrated around 150,000 troops next to the Ukraine border.

Russia has said it is carrying out planned military drills and that some of the troops have been already withdrawn to their permanent bases, though Western countries have said there is no evidence of a pull-back.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said military action could begin “in the next several days” but stressed that a diplomatic solution was still possible.

Moscow has denied intending to invade, accusing the West of stoking tensions.
