Ukraine: Donetsk rejoices as Putin signs decree on republic independence

Donetsk locals gathered in the city centre on Monday evening to celebrate the recognition of the independent republic by Russia.

Russian and DPR flags were seen flying as dozens of people watched the address of Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing the recognition.

Earlier on Monday leaders of LPR and DPR asked Putin to recognise independence of self-proclaimed republics.

EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned of sanctions if Russia recognises the republics. “If there is annexation, there will be sanctions, and if there is recognition, I will put the sanctions on the table and the ministers will decide,” stated Borrell after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
