Local residents in Donetsk spoke out about the effects of shooting in their area on Friday, following the announcement by DNR authorities of four violations of the indefinite ceasefire in the republic by Ukrainian armed forces earlier that day.

According to the centre, 120-millimetre mortars, hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers, AGS grenade launchers, as well as large-calibre machine guns were used in the Donetsk direction. No information was given regarding possible casualties or damage.

“Life passes, we are more or less used to this shooting already. But if something comes close to us, we go to the basement and hide,” shared local resident Vitaliy.

Resident Ekaterina Sotkina shared how she was forced to move residence after her house was bombed in Christmas 2019.

“I gathered some things, went out. I stayed at my daughter’s, then at a neighbour’s - all over town. I just came back home, last year in the autumn, 2021.”

Sotkina went on to thank the UN for helping to rebuild her property following the damages.
Agreements to resolve the conflict in Donbass were signed at a summit in Minsk in February 2015. However, the OSCE has recently reported an increase in ceasefire violations.

The latest report by the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination (OSCE) on January 20 stated that 152 ceasefire violations had been recorded in the Donetsk region, including 92 explosions. 268 violations, including 113 explosions, were recorded in the Luhansk region.

The OSCE’s Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) confirmed reports of two civilian casualties in non-government-controlled areas of Donetsk region.

SOT, Local resident: “Life passes, we are more or less used to this shooting already. But if something comes close to us, we go to the basement and hide. If somewhere in the distance [there is shooting], we go about our business. And what’s our business? There’s the market, bread. That’s all.”

SOT, Local resident: “[The situation is] awful. My house was bombed at the beginning of 2019, on Christmas night. No roof, no windows, no doors [left], 15-degree frost. I gathered some things, went out. I stayed at my daughter’s, then at a neighbour’s - all over town. I just came back home, last year in the autumn, 2021. But the UN helped. All of a sudden they came and put a roof on the house, replaced the windows and put up the doors. God bless them! And I went back home. Bombing and bombing - [we] endure it.”

SOT, Local resident: “Yes, often [there is shooting]. Especially at night or in the evening, when you’re already in bed. And when it’s morning, you even try to get up early and get dressed, so you can jump out. But where to go? We hope something will change. Every time we hope something will change for the better.”

SOT, Local resident: “First of all [during the shootings] I think about my child. If she’s at school, then [I] thank God she’s at school and not at home at that time. If she is at home, then I send her to the corridor, if [it is] strong [shooting]. If, of course, [they] don’t shoot much, then everything depends on the situation.”
