Dozens of Hasidic Jews arrived at Boryspil International Airport in Kyiv on Thursday to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Rosh Hashanah celebrations will begin on the evening of September 6 and last until the evening of September 8.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Cherkasy region, nearly 23,500 pilgrims will arrive in Uman during the first week of September. More than 600 police officers and over 200 members of the National Guard have been deployed to ensure security.

Uman is an important pilgrimage site for some Hasidic Jews, as it is the burial place of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ukraine’s borders were closed to foreigners last year, and events were held in a narrow circle of believers staying in the country at the time.
