Ukraine: US support for Ukrainian sovereignty 'unwavering' says DefSec Austin

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin reiterated Washington’s “unwavering” support to Ukraine and its territorial integrity, speaking at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Taran in Kiev on Tuesday.

“No third country has a veto over NATO’s membership decisions. Ukraine, as you heard me say earlier, has the right to decide its own future foreign policy and we expect that they will be able to do that without any outside interference. And finally, I would say our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty is unwavering,” said Austin.

The minister also called on Russia to “to end its occupation of Crimea, to stop perpetuating the war in eastern Ukraine, to end its destabilising activities in the Black Sea and along Ukraine’s borders, and to halt its persistent cyber attacks and other malign activities against the United States and our allies and partners.”

Ukraine’s Taran on his part said the two had discussed “specifics of the most important project on the development of the fundamental capabilities of the armed forces of Ukraine, which are critical to ensure defence capabilities of our state on the land, in air, sea and cyberspace.”

He added the “practical realisation of this project will give the defence forces the opportunity to effectively counter real and potential threats.”
