Ukraine: Volunteers train with wooden assault rifles amid growing Russia tensions

Members of the Territorial Defence Unit took part in field training in Kiev on Sunday. The drills, initiated by the leader of the far-right National Corps party Andrey Biletsky and the Public Defence Staff, united members of patriotic movements as well as volunteers.

Men and women trained with fake wooden machine guns on the territory of the abandoned Atek factory and ran through an obstacle course.

The official web page of the National Corps party says that the ‘instructors with combat background’ conducted tactical and paramedical training. The training was aimed at being prepared ‘to fight back the enemy’, according to the same source.

“The Russian Federation continues to build up troops on the borders with Ukraine, foreign intelligence data indicate the Kremlin intentions to launch an open invasion. Meanwhile, our government is not taking any adequate steps to prepare the country and the population to be ready to defend against the occupation. Under these conditions, we must rely on our own forces and, in case of an open Russian offensive, be ready to repulse the enemy,” the National Corps website said in a statement.

On Wednesday Deputy Head of the People’s Militia Department of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Eduard Basurin said that Ukrainian nationalist organisations are recruiting people with combat experience in Donbas to send to the frontline. He also added that the intelligence registered the arrival of echelons with petrol, oil and lubricant supplies as well as with ammunition designed to replenish the military operational stocks of the Armed Forces of Ukrainian brigades located on the line of contact.

On Friday the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the panic over Russian tensions has been taking its toll on Ukraine.

“Do we have tanks riding through the streets? No. But the feeling is such if you are not here… In England, Germany, France, Lithuania - I talked to the Lithuanian president and other leaders, - the media gives the impression that there is a war going on, that we have troops on the streets, mobilisation, people are moving somewhere. It’s not like that. We don’t need this panic. And this is a very important point,” said Zelensky.

On Saturday the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that unjustified panic had been created by the media around the situation in Ukraine.
