Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan urged the international community to aid the newly formed Taliban government in Afghanistan to prevent a ‘great humanitarian crisis,’ during a pre-recorded speech aired at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday in New York City.

“If we neglect Afghanistan right now, according to the UN half the people of Afghanistan are already vulnerable, and by next year almost 90 percent of the people in Afghanistan will go below the poverty line,” warned Khan.

“This will have serious repercussions not just for the neighbours of Afghanistan but it will have repercussions everywhere if a destabilised, chaotic Afghanistan again becomes a safe haven for international terrorists - the reason why the US came to Afghanistan in the first place,” he added.

The prime minister said that therefore there was ‘only one way to go,’ which was to ‘strengthen’ the current Taliban government and ‘stabilise it.’

He emphasised that the Taliban had made promises of being more open and tolerant than during its earlier period of rule.

“If the world community incentivises them, and encourages them to walk this talk, it will be a win-win situation for everyone,” Khan said.

On August 15, the Taliban seized control of Kabul as the US and its NATO allies withdrew their troops after a 20-year conflict, and announced the formation of an interim government on September 7.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also called for assistance from the international community by engaging with the Taliban and to find mechanisms to avoid the collapse of country’s economy.
