The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called for ‘maximum restraint’ from both sides after rockets fired from Lebanon were met with Israeli artillery fire, according to a statement by the UN Secretary General’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, on Wednesday.

“UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, was in immediate touch with the parties. He urged them to cease fire and to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation, especially on this solemn anniversary,” said Dujarric, from the UN headquarters in New York City.

No casualties on the Israeli side of the border have so far been reported.

The powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group is the strongest force in southern Lebanon and has an extensive rocket arsenal. It is not yet known if the group were responsible for this latest attack.

The UN mission remains engaged in communication with the parties involved and is currently investigating the attack.
