The meteorological agency says severe winter pressure intensified morning, bringing the coldest air mass of the season over Japan. The cold weather resulted in heavy snowfalls, mainly in areas along the Sea of Japan coast from western to northern Japan.

Forecasters predict that heavy snowfall will continue in areas along the coast of the Sea of Japan in northern and eastern Japan. They urge people to be vigilant due to possible traffic congestion.

Hiruzen in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture saw 88 centimeters of snow in the 24 hours to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Daisen from Tottori Prefecture was 79 centimeters tall during the same period.

Snow has also accumulated at lower elevations, where there is usually little snow. As of 11 a.m., 10 centimeters of snow had fallen in Kyoto City and 6 centimeters in Mie Prefecture’s Tsu City.

Temperatures across the country have dropped to near their lowest levels in a decade. Lows on Wednesday morning fell to minus 12.8 degrees Celsius in Sapporo, to minus 7.5 degrees in the city of Sendai and to minus 5.8 degrees in Niigata city.

Winter pressure is expected to ease from the west, but localized heavy snowfall and blizzards remain likely through Thursday in northern Japan, the Hokuriku region, Niigata Prefecture and the northern Kanto region.

Snowfall is expected to reach 80 centimeters in the Tohoku region, 60 centimeters in Hokuriku and 50 centimeters in Hokkaido in the 24 hours
