Unrest erupts across Kazakhstan amid fuel price hike

Mass unrest has erupted across Kazakhstan, with footage from Almaty on Wednesday showing protesters hijacking and burning vehicles, as well as torching the office of the ‘MIR’ TV channel.

At one point, a group of individuals can be seen beating a lone police officer in the middle of the street.

Protests have taken place in Almaty, Uralsk, Aktau, Aktobe, Shymkent, alongside other cities across the central Asian state. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jormat Tokayev announced on Wednesday that he had asked the heads of CSTO states to assist Kazakhstan in overcoming the ‘terrorist threat.’

Following the outbreak of protests, Tokayev accepted the resignation of the country’s government, which will continue performing its duties until a new cabinet of ministers is formed.

Unauthorised rallies began in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan on Sunday after prices for liquefied gas rose from 60 to 120 tenge (€0.12 - €0.24) per litre from January 1. The price hike came after the government lifted price controls on liquefied petroleum gas citing a need to liberalise the market.
