An urgent meeting of the UN Security Council will be useful only if it helps to start business discussions on the situation in Afghanistan said Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday in Rostov-on-Don.

“Now the Afghan representatives are asking the UN to convene an urgent meeting of the Security Council. It will be useful if they meet not only to discuss [the situation] and work off their anger on each other but if they meet on the basis of a prepared result that will help start business negotiations without trying to manoeuvre,” the Russian minister stated.

Lavrov also mentioned that Russia supports a political settlement of the Afghan conflict grounded on the decisions of the UN Security Council and regrets that the Taliban sees only a military solution to the crisis.

Russia is in contact with all political forces in Afghanistan, according to the minister.

“We talk with all more or less significant political forces in Afghanistan: the government, the Taliban, representatives of Uzbeks, Tajiks, with everyone. We see how difficult it is for the Afghan society to reach a consensus,” he said.
