As polls closed last night, American voters were hoping for a decisive election result. But crowds waiting for a winner to be declared by midnight were left disappointed.

Donald Trump’s support once again defied the predictions of pollsters, as the president held the battleground state of Florida to deny Joe Biden an early knockout blow.

But the election remains on a knife edge in other key swing states like Pennsylvania. It may take days or even longer for all votes cast to be counted.

Both candidates have predicted they’re on track to take the White House, with Trump tweeting: ‘We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election’.

Fears of major civil unrest have not been realised so far, but tensions are likely to remain high before a clear winner is announced.
