A group of activists staged a protest in front of the British Embassy in Washington DC Sunday afternoon, demanding for Julian Assange to be released from prison and all charges against him to be dismissed.
Holding Signs and displaying a billboard on a truck, the group expressed its criticism against both US and British governments for holding Assange in prison.
Activist Beth Bracken of the group Action For Assange, discussed the issue and outlined the hypocrisy in the district attorney not supporting dropping the charges. “Merrick Garland is the attorney general, he could also drop the charges right now, saying okay we understand this is a threat to the first amendment. He’s come out strongly in favour of press freedom and we don’t understand why he won’t just drop the charges” Bracken said.
September marks the passing of one year since Julian’s witness hearing at the Old Bailey in downtown London. After a judge ruled against his extradition to the US, the Wikileaks founder is still in detention while the US appeal the decision.
Assange faces espionage charges for obtaining and publishing secret military and diplomatic documents in 2010.
SOT, Beth Bracken, Action For Assange: “He is right now being threatened with extradition to the United States for publishing evidence of their war crimes and a collateral murder video and the Afghanistan and Iraq war log leaks and we believe and this is completely unjust. It’s a threat to our first amendment hers not even a US citizen he’s an Australian citizen. Who’s being grabbed by the US out of the UK to be extradited and spend the rest of his life in a supermax prison he’s a peaceful man, he’s never committed an act of violence in his entire life and yet he’s going to spend the rest of his life in jail with no access to his family or very limited access to attorneys and we feel that is unjust. It needs to stop. They need to drop with the charges against him by the DOJ and the UK needs to say no to the extradition.”
SOT, Beth Bracken, Action For Assange: “Biden could pardon him right now, he could sign a pardon for him saying okay were going to drop this entire case. Merrick Garland is the attorney general, he could also drop the charges right now, saying okay we understand this is a threat to the first amendment. He’s come out strongly in favour of press freedom and we don’t understand why he won’t just drop the charges and say yes we agree this is a first amendment case, which is what it is.”
SOT, Eric Harvey, Assange Defence, Chicago Chapter: “He faces 175 years in prison for the act of publishing. A constitutionally protected activity, and you know The press is on the line, freedom of the press is under threat, also very much human rights, it’s a human issue in so far as people need information in order to understand their place in the world. Who they are and how can they effectively represent themselves in the world”
SOT, Marie Fonseca, Protester: “My message is that they need to free Assange, and also that these wars have to end there’s no excuse for the amount war crimes that are happening and the torture and the just complete evil that they’re dong all across the world and the United States and the UK are pretty much known that they have destroyed the entire world “
