At least 30 protesters were arrested for civil disobedience as hundreds marched in Washington DC, on Wednesday, demanding Congress and the Biden administration pass a broad 3.5 trillion dollar ‘Build Back Better’ legislation, which includes large parts of US President Joe Biden’s economic agenda.
Without a single Republican onboard, Democrats are seeking to pass the bill in the Senate using reconciliation rules to avoid the filibuster. But moderate Senators Joe Manchin from West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona became the biggest hurdle within their own party, having refused the back the bill.
Senate Democrats agreed last minute on Wednesday to drop paid family leave and medical leave, two cornerstone positions from the 2020 election campaign of President Biden, while key policies to address climate change may also be on the chopping block amid negotiations with the two moderate senators.
