US President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia from Washington DC on Tuesday in response to Russia’s recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s’ Republics.

“He’s setting up a rationale to take more territory by force,” the US leader said at the White House.

“I’m going to begin to impose sanctions in response, far beyond the steps we and our allies and partners implemented in 2014,” he added, referencing Russia’s integration of Crimea.

US sanctions will hit VEB bank and Russia’s military bank, with financial restrictions set to be put in place against prominent Russians and their family members starting from Wednesday.
