A delegation of more than 50 Democratic representatives from Texas arrived in Washington DC on Monday.

They left the state in attempt to block an election bill pushed by the Republican Party.

The Democratic politicians say the law will have restrictive effects on voting rights.

“Today more than 50 democratic members of the Texas house left Austin and left Texas, not because we want to. It breaks our heart that we have to do it. But we do it because we’re in a fight to save our democracy,” said Texas Democratic Caucus Chair Chris Turner.

According to the state constitution, at least two thirds of the 150 representatives need to be present to vote on a bill.

A collective walkout of Democratic representatives prevented an earlier version of the law from being adopted in May.
