USA: Federal govt implements first-ever water restrictions due to drought-stricken Colorado River

Water consumption restrictions will soon be in place in multiple states across the southwest due to depleting water supply in Lake Mead. This historic decision by the Federal Water Agency is the first time that such restrictions have been put in place.

Lake Mead, the country’s largest reservoir by water capacity, has, due to year on year drought, dropped to 35 percent of its capacity. Doug Hendrix, public affairs specialist for the Lower Colorado River Basin discussed the lowering levels in Lake Mead and surrounding reservoirs.

“The entire Colorado river system now stands at only about 40 percent of capacity. So these two decades of drought have taken quite a significant hit on these storage reservoirs.”

Restrictions will come into place for early January 2022.
