USA: First shoes handmade by Nike co-founder expected to fetch up to $1.2m at auction

A rare pair of track and field spikes handmade by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman is up for auction at New York City’s Sotheby’s, as seen on Thursday.

The shoes were designed by Bowerman for Canadian sprinter Harry Jerome who won an Olympic bronze medal in the 100-metre final at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, said the shoes have four prototype logos that bear a resemblance to the Nike Swoosh.

The shoes are estimated to fetch between $800,000 and $1.2M (€679,780 - €1,019,671).

SOT, Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear & Modern Collectables: “Bill Bowerman, who was Nike’s co-founder, handmade prototype logo track spikes. He made these for an Olympian named Harry Jerome, who actually competed in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics and won the bronze medal. So it’s again a great coincidence that of course the Olympics are hosted in Tokyo again this year. What really makes those so significant is that they were created either likely before the Blue Ribbon Sports era or during the Blue Ribbon Sports era, before Nike had formally founded in the early 70’s, and Bowerman is experimenting with the concept of a brand.”

Those are being estimated at $800,000 to $1.2M (€679,780 - €1,019,671).”
