Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urged United States’ companies to provide internet service to Cubans through Florida private establishments amid anti-government protests during a roundtable meeting with political officials in Miami on Tuesday.

The meeting was also attended by members of the exiled Cuban community.

“They are revolting against a corrupt communist dictatorship that has ruled that island for over 60 years,” DeSantis said, discussing the option to continue sanctions.

In recent days, thousands of Cuban took to the streets to protest against President Miguel Diaz-Canel amid a worsening economic crisis, a record number of COVID-19 cases and a lack of basic goods.

Diaz-Canel has since accused the United States of ‘orchestrating’ the unrest via social media campaigns by sending ‘mercenaries’ to the country.
