Britney Spears supporters gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, on Wednesday.

The group rallied as Spears’ conservatorship hearing was about to begin in LA.

Protesters from all walks of life rallied not only to support the celebrity but also to draw the attention to the issue of guardianship and conservatorship.

Washington area residents, Rick and Terri Black, who run a non-profit that helps people who stuck in similar conservatorship situation said the problem has grown because there has been “no oversight of our nation’s equity court system,” leaving the vulnerable open to exploitation by the “legal community.”

Another rally attendee Melanie Carlson, who said she had been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder herself commented, “whenever you made fun of her you made fun of anybody who experiencing something like that.”

US popstar Britney Spears has been embroiled in a legal battle with her father Jamie Spears regarding legal conservatorship. Britney alleges her father has controlled her life for more than 13 years, including forcing her to perform and not allowing her to remove her birth control. The conservatorship was awarded to Mr Spears by a Los Angeles court in 2008, following concerns over Britney’s mental health after she shaved her head in public and was admitted to mental health facilities several times.

SOT, Protester: “This is a clear cut situation abuse of power and greed and you can help bring justice not only to Britney Spears but also those who are in conservatorship abuse situation.”

SOT, Rick Black, Director of CEAR (group advocating against guardianship abuse): “Britney puts a voice and a face on this scourge that has been lacking really since World War Two. This problem has been growing because there is no oversight of our nation’s equity court system. And the legal community has found easy money trafficking the estates of the vulnerable by putting them into guardianships and conservatorships.”

SOT, Rick Black, Director of CEAR: “Britney has been isolated in plain sight now for 13 years. Her family has been defamed in many different ways because James Spears, the dad Jamie, he didn’t control this affair. This was controlled by the attorneys who work within Los Angeles county courthouse, probate court. So yes, the parallels are there again, and the parallels are there, whether you are 18 and destitute or a 118 and worth 200 million.”

SOT, Melanie Carlson, Protester: “I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and psychosis in 2007, had a very public on a local-level breakdown and I remember the shame and stigma that I felt and how everyone derided Britney. And she has been a punchline to people for up until very recently. So I am out here because I want people to know that, you know, stars are a proxy for real people at home. You know, that may be experiencing the same thing, so whenever you made fun of her you made fun of anybody who experiencing something like that.”
