Hundreds gathered in the Bronx in New York City on Sunday to mourn the loss of 15 people killed in a fire on January 9.
Black hearses lined up the streets outside the Islamic Cultural Center where mourners had gathered for a funeral service held for 15 of the 17 people killed in the Bronx high-rise fire.
“We’re here to suffer and mourn for the children and the families that have lost their lives in the twin fires. It is sad for the Bronx because our hearts are broken. We are in times of crisis; in times of a pandemic, and now we are looking at a funeral for families,” Irene Estrada, District Leader for the Bronx said.
Estrada continued, “there has to be more policy changes; not only a task force for emergency services and prevention, but who’s going to go arrest the landlords when families are suffering and dying. This funeral shouldn’t have come to pass today. Seventeen people lost their lives, and nine of them were children.”
The fire stared from a space heater that had been left on for days in an apartment on the 3rd floor of the apartment complex in the Bronx.

SOT, Irene Estrada, District Leader for the Bronx: “We’re here to suffer and mourn for the children and the families that have lost their lives in the twin fires. It is sad for the Bronx because our hearts are broken. We are in times of crisis; in times of a pandemic, and now we are looking at a funeral for families. This was unnecessary. When you take a look at the cross of the suffering here in the Bronx, it needs to stop. Enough is enough.”

SOT, Irene Estrada, District Leader for the Bronx: “One thing that we’re suffering right now is that the temperatures are so low and families across the Bronx have no heat and no hot water. With the pandemic, many times in crisis, they can call 311 and not get any service. There has to be more policy changes; not only a task force for emergency services and prevention, but who’s going to go arrest the landlords when families are suffering and dying. This funeral shouldn’t have come to pass today. Seventeen people lost their lives, and nine of them were children. How can we represent the Bronx when the policy makers and elected officials have to do their jobs, and if they don’t do their job then they shouldn’t be representing the poor. Because immigrants come here from all over the world to make a better life, and to come here and to lose their lives in a fire because of inadequate heat.”
