USA: Hundreds partake in Tarpon Springs Epiphany celebrations

Crowds gathered to partake in Epiphany celebrations, which involved divers racing retrieve the Holy Cross, in Tarpon Springs, Florida, on Thursday.
A parade was held to mark the occasion, with marching band members dressed in traditional costume.
The Archbishop then threw the Holy Cross into Spring Bayou, where local boys scrambled to try and retrieve it.
“I feel amazing, it’s such a blessing. I’m so proud of everyone else that was there, you know, it’s an honour to just participate in this event,” said Alexander Makris, who retreived the cross successfully.
The celebration is considered the largest Greek Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemisphere.
Racing for the cross is a traditional ceremony held by the Orthodox community internationally, as part of Epiphany celebrations. Aside from celebrating Epiphany, participants believe that catching the religious icon of the cross will bring health and strength in the New Year.

SOT, Joseph Cooley, Cross Retriever 2017: “We’re here for the Epiphany Celebration, it’s a tradition in the Greek Orthodox Church and it’s in celebration of the baptism of Jesus Christ, and it brings all the different churches together, kids come from all over Florida. I know it’s really good for other churches to meet each other, a lot of the divers are from different parts of Florida.”

SOT, Christian Chrysakis, Cross Retriever 2018: “This has being going on for 116 years because it’s the 116th celebration today, so it’s been for a long time here. I’ve had family memories going back to my great grandparents who took part in this tradition so it’s very sentimental to me and my family.”
