USA: Indigenous tribes present hand-carved totem pole to Biden to urge protection of sacred sites

Tribal leaders from across the US and environmental activists gathered at the National Mall to welcome the arrival of the totem pole on Friday, in a bid to draw attention to the environmental issues that the indigenous Nations are currently facing.

The approximately 7.5 metres (25 foot) long wooden pole was hand-carved by the members of the Lummi Nation, that resides in the State of Washington and in Canada. The group accompanied the totem pole as it made a two-week cross country journey to be gifted to the US President Joe Biden to urge an immediate action to protect the sacred sites.

The journey called ‘Red Road to DC’ was completed in the US capital and included a number of stops at sacred indigenous sites that are at risk from infrastructure projects, like pipelines constructions.

The rally featured a number of speakers including the US Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, one of the first Native American women to lead a cabinet agency.
