USA: Initial hearing of Maduro's ally Alex Saab facing corruption charges held in Miami

The initial hearing of Colombian businessman and close aid of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Alex Saab was held in a Miami federal court on Monday.
Earlier Saab had been placed on a US-bound plane after a 16-month legal battle in Cape Verde, where he was arrested during a diplomatic mission in June 2020. He appeared at a Monday hearing via video link.
Venezuela’s government stated that it would halt negotiations with US-backed opposition set to resume in Mexico City in response to Saab’s extradition.
The US Treasury accuses the businessman of using his accounts in American banks to launder profits of corruption. Alex Saab’s arraignment date was set for November 1.
