People were seen queuing outside New York City’s Federal Courthouse as the jury selection for a trial over Sarah Palin’s civil defamation lawsuit against The New York Times was set to start on Monday.
The former Republican vice-presidential nominee has set out to sue the media titan for allegedly damaging her reputation with an editorial published in 2017. Palin states that the editorial incorrectly linked the 2011 shooting of Republican Gabby Giffords to a map circulated by Palin’s Political Action Committee (PAC), displaying certain electoral districts under crosshairs.
The New York Times corrected the misleading information and apologised for it, and a judge dismissed the case. A federal appeals court revived the case in 2019, and now the news giant is facing a libel case.
According to local media, US District Judge Jed Rakoff stated that the trial could begin on February 3, once Palin, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, recovered adequately.
