USA: LA locals pay tribute to 14-year-old Orellana-Peralta shot by LAPD

Los Angeles locals were seen laying flowers at the Burlington store entrance in North Hollywood on Wednesday, where 14-year-old girl Valentina Orellana-Peralta was killed by a stray bullet shot by an LAPD officer on December 23.
Those paying respects to Orellana-Peralta and passersby expressed their feelings about the tragedy.
“It makes me wanna cry, it’s so sad that this keeps happening in our world,” said passerby Vicki.
“It’s one of those things to where you definitely know that the cop is going to get paid leave and in a couple of months he is probably going to end up in Orange County doing work over there,” said another local, Don, who came to pay his respects.
On Thursday, December 23, police officers responded to reports of a man attacking shoppers with a bike lock inside a Burlington store in North Hollywood. At the scene, one of the officers opened fire on the attacker, 24-year-old Daniel Elena-Lopez, and shot him. One of the bullets reportedly went through the wall behind the suspect and hit Orellana-Peralta, who was hiding with her mother in a dressing room. The teen from Chile, who had moved to the US around six months before the tragedy, reportedly died in her mother’s arms.

SOT, Vicki, Passerby: “It makes me wanna cry, it’s so sad that this keeps happening in our world. So local, it’s too close to home. It’s a tragedy what happened to this girl and to the people shopping at Christmas time, anytime.”

SOT, Don, Passerby: “I was here the day that it happened, I was actually here 3 minutes before everything happened and I saw the cops rushing in and you know, when you see seven cops rushing with hand guns you know someone is not gonna make it. That is the first thing that I thought about and like an hour later I saw exactly what happened. It’s a tragedy, it definitely is. It’s one of those things to where you definitely know that the cop is gonna get paid leave and in a couple of months he is probably gonna end up in Orange County doing work over there, and that’s kind of the sad part.”

SOT, Wilson Baca, Passerby: “It’s very sad, I feel very sad cause I came here when I was 13 and she was only 14. New life, new language, I mean, it’s very sad. The police, they are trained to deal with this kind of people, not to kill, so what they did, they took their own step by killing the guy and at the same time the girl.”

SOT, Passerby: “If you see the video footage you can see how the officer is pretty much trigger happy or excited, he is like ready to kill, you know, and that is basically a reflection of the way that the LAPD trains their police officers.”

SOT, Chxpo, Passerby: “It just breaks my heart to see kids dying for the people who are supposed to protect us and serve us and make us feel safe. When I see kids die from these people it just ruins, it just makes my life miserable.”
