USA: LA voters head to the polls for California recall election

California voters were seen casting their ballots in Los Angeles, on Tuesday, to decide whether to recall Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom or let him serve out the end of his term set for January 2023.
Some voters expressed their support for the politician and dismissed the recall effort as ‘ridiculous,’ ‘highly political’ and ‘unfair,’ while others said they had backed the recall, criticising the governor as ‘corrupt’ and a ‘disaster.’
Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder is Newsom’s main opponent of the 46 candidates on the recall ballot, in which there are only two questions. The first one is whether Newsom should be removed from office and the second one which of the recall candidates, mostly Republican, should replace him. Newsom would be ousted from office if more than 50 percent of voters support the recall. In that case, the candidate with the most votes would be chosen as the new governor, regardless of the number of votes. The latest polls indicate that ‘no’ is set to win with around 57 percent of votes.
The election transcends the state’s borders since the new governor could appoint a new US senator and give Republicans a majority at a now evenly-split chamber after California senator 88-year-old Diane Feinstein’s potential retirement.
The recall efforts to oust the Democratic governor started back in June 2020 for Newsom’s handling of crime, homelessness, immigration, housing costs, and the death penalty. However, the campaign gained steam and refocused on the pandemic in November after the governor was caught mask-less at a party in a restaurant when COVID-19-related restrictions were in place.
This is the second recall to qualify for the ballot in the History of the Golden State. In 2003 Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced Democratic Governor Gray Davis after the incumbent lost a recall vote by 11 points.

SOT, Jason, Los Angeles voter: “I voted ‘no’ in the recall election and the reason I voted no is because the candidates didn’t really convince me with what they would bring new to the table. the change that they were speaking. It just seemed that they were saying vote this person out but not much of what I would do that’s different from that person.”

SOT, Katsy Chappell, Los Angeles voter: “I am voting “no” on the recall because we have so many more important things going on and I don’t like what the other team is doing, I think it’s very unfair.”

SOT, Brianna Gardner, Los Angeles voter: “I am voting to recall Gavin Newsom because I moved here from the Detroit area nine years ago and I’ve seen what a corrupt government looks like, how it affects the city. As you know Kwame Kilpatrick [former Detroit mayor] obviously put Detroit in a very bad state and since moving here nine years ago I’ve seen a very obvious decline in at least in at least the Los Angeles metro area.”

SOT, Chantal, Los Angeles voter: “Yes, I voted for Larry Elder this morning and I am desperately hoping that we recall Gavin Newsom who’s been nothing but a disaster for our state, it’s very clear. I’ll tell you one of the things that bothered me. It’s not that they are draining the water out of the ocean, that he is not doing the right thing for the forest fires but it’s the homelessness, it’s the crime by decriminalizing drug use.”

SOT, Marcell Hilliard, Los Angeles voter: “I am voting for “no” because I do not want to see California become Texas or Florida so keeping Newsom in office, I don’t wanna see him replaced.”

SOT, Nick, Los Angeles voter: “I am gonna vote “no” on the recall of Gavin Newsom because I just feel like the gridlock that a republican governor would cost would just kind of defunct the system.”

SOT, Marine Mansfield, Los Angeles voter: “I am going to vote “no” because I support Gavin Newsom, I support his work, I support what he’s been doing so far and I think this whole thing is totally ridiculous and it’s highly political and I don’t go by this.”
