New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters rescued a man who fell into a storm drain of 30 feet (approx. 9 metres) depth near Cross Island Parkway and Whitestone Expressway in the borough of Queens in New York City, footage released on Sunday shows.

According to FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Gallo “the victim that was removed, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to the local press, the brother of the injured man was present when the rescue operation took place. He stated that his relative suffered from mental illness and had contacted him after falling into the shaft.

It is yet unclear under which circumstances the person fell into the storm drain, and whether it is related to the passage of the storm Ida through the city. An investigation has been opened in this regard.
