Mayfield locals could be seen returning home to salvage what was left from their houses, Monday after a tornado outbreak wreaked havoc in Kentucky and states in the midwest, killing at least 74.
“We had a good basement and also it was after business hours, and a lot of these buildings here are businesses where the people were gone home. If they would have been open in the daytime there would have been more deaths in this area”, said Ruth Mayers, a resident of Mayfield.
“My kids are helping me, but the people that have no place to go and no families, that’s the ones that break my heart, have to stay in shelters until some way they can get some help to go somewhere”, added Mayers.
On Saturday several tornados hit Kentucky, in what Governor Andy Beshear deemed the worst catastrophe in the history of the state.
SOT, Ruth Mayers, Resident: “Is the first time I`m seeing it, when we left at night it was dark, and have not been back. My kids came trying to gather stuff back. When we where in the basement and the concrete wall were shaking I knew it was bad. When the insulation started falling and the water started pouring in, we knew it was going to be… I’m kind of stoned in a state of shock.”
