USA: Minneapolis locals vote on replacing police department

Minneapolis residents headed to polls on Tuesday to vote for a new mayor and approve a number of proposals, including whether to abolish the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with the ‘Department of Public Safety.’
The new department would be under the administration of the mayor and the city council.
“I do not think it will lead to this kind of important sort of reforms that we need. It does not do anything about addressing qualified immunity, or anything to address requiring police carrying liability insurance. It does not do anything to address the militarisation of the police,” a local said.
The referendum comes following the death of George Floyd in the city last year, and it needs 51 percent of votes to pass.

SOT, Local: “For me, I look at it like if it passes, I do not think it will lead to this kind of important sort of reforms that we need. It does not do anything about addressing qualified immunity, or anything to address requiring police carrying liability insurance. It does not do anything to address the militarisation of the police, things like that.

SOT, Local: “Two, the south side is not looking at it - they do not live here, they have no idea of the context of what’s going on here. I was assaulted and had to go to the hospital in February by two black kids. I have seen carjacking on the street with a shoot out - fifty rounds, four cars got bullet holes on them on the street. None of this ever happened before. I invite anyone on the south side that want to get a better idea of what ‘defund the police’ did to our city, to come up to the north side and hang out for a while. They are openly dealing drugs in the parking lot, going into ALDI on 10th Avenue. Openly dealing drugs and the cops are not doing anything because there is not enough people. Words have consequences.”

SOT, Local: “There are three ballot initiatives on the total ballot today. The first one is to grant the Minneapolis mayor position more power. They say currently Minneapolis has a weak mayoral system. I do not necessarily categorise it that way.”

SOT, Local: “It gives less accountability to whoever - accountability that we have already - because the way that I see it will work is, every city council person will have their own man in the police department.”

SOT, Local: “The black community of North Minneapolis, which is about fifty per cent of the whole north side are somewhat mixed, but I think I am more in favour to vote no. Ironically, even though it is the black community that seems more to be persecuted by bad cops, one you can not deny that most of the crime that is happening in the city is by black people.”

SOT, Local: “Fearless, you will have the political will, you can have power, as mayor in Minneapolis, but we have a coward like [Jacob] Frey. This is what you get. The second question on the ballot is the support for the Minneapolis Public Safety Department to basically still dismantle the Minneapolis police department.”
