Dozens of people laid down flowers by the Marine Corps Camp Pendleton military base main entry sign, Saturday, after the Pentagon revealed that ten out of the 13 US service members killed in Afghanistan on Thursday’s suicide bombing were based at the camp in Oceanside, California.
Nine marines and a sailor from Pendleton, most of them in their early twenties, perished in the attack outside Kabul’s airport, along with at least 170 afghans.
The Pendleton base is home to the First Marine Division, the largest and oldest in the Corps.
Those who paid their respects expressed their sorrow and frustration with these deaths. “It’s heartbreaking”, said Oceanside neighbour Daniel Samuelson; “It’s almost the anniversary of the 9/11 and I feel like we stepped back”, reflected Cindy Cardiel, a wife and mother of veterans.
Some blamed “the leaders” and “Biden” for the loss: “I do think that [US President Joe] Biden is to blame, I feel he went about it the wrong way”, while another woman pointed out that “we’ve been there 20 years, why all of a sudden in the last two weeks is it their issue?”
The attack was the deadliest against US troops in Afghanistan in the last 10 years.
