USA: Porsche 917 K from 1970 Le Mans race to be auctioned-off at Monterey Car Week

A unique Porsche 917 K which took part in the 1970 Le Mans race, is expected to fetch the highest price of any car sold in Porsche’s three-day auction at the Monterey Car Week, as seen on Wednesday.

“It was raced by David Hobbs and Mike Hailwood, and notably finished in the Gulf Oil livery, as one of the most famous liveries of any racing car of all times,” said Ian Kelleher, the chief marketing officer of auction company RM Sotheby’s. “While the car didn’t necessarily belong to any celebrities, what make this car famous in its own way is that it was used in the movie Le Mans, Steve McQueen’s seminal movie Le Mans, which came out in 1971.”

The auction will run at the Monterey Car Week from Thursday to Saturday.
