Several groups of immigrants gathered outside the White House in Washington DC on Thursday, demanding that the Biden administration deliver its promise and provide a path to citizenship for the nearly eleven million undocumented immigrants living in the country.
“We are more than 11 million people waiting for an immigration reform and this is the time that our officials must take care, must take care of our people, all these immigrants here are working hard everyday, all those families are waiting for many years, and we deserve to have a pathway to citizenship, we need the citizenship for everyone,” stated Connecticut worker centre director Nelly Jara.
Activists are pressuring Vice President Kamala Harris to ignore the parliamentarian’s advice and include the immigration bill that could lead to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. More protests are expected in the upcoming days.
SOT, Jennifer Epps-Abbison, Centre for Popular Democracy member: “This White House, promised that it was going to deliver for the communities that turn out for them. There is a bill in front of congress that could deliver a pathway to citizenship to over 11 million people in this country and there is a parliamentarian who was not elected by any of us standing on the way, we know that the vice president has the ultimate authority on this and can make the decision so we are here to demand that she keep our campaign promises and that she deliver citizenship with the infrastructure bill with reconciliation.”
SOT, Glo Choi, Korean immigrant: “When I first joined the community, I didn’t know that there was more then just dreaming, I thought dreaming was just something I did at night when I wanted more then the shambles that I was living with a day to day basis. I thought it was something I just did when I took a smoke break during work, working fourteen hours shift every single day of my life, I did not know it was more to life than that. But know I want to live, I want to do more than dream.”
SOT, Nelly Jara, Director of Connecticut Worker Centre: “We are more than 11 million people waiting for an immigration reform and this is the time that our officials must take care, must take care of our people, all these immigrants here are working hard everyday, all those families are waiting for many years, and we deserve to have a pathway to citizenship, we need the citizenship for everyone.”
SOT, Jennifer Epps-Abbison, Centre for Popular Democracy member: “The parliamentarians’ advice is just that, advice. But that is not the rule of law, we trust the senate and ultimately the vice president that has the final authority of making this decision. We have to do what is right for our people, the parliamentarian maybe play politics with people’s life but doing the right thing should not be political.”
SOT, Jessica Ramos, New York State Senator: “I think that people elected the senate, people elected congress members, the parliamentarian is not elected by the people. We should be the ones to determine, through our representatives, what the agenda of this country should be.”
