USA: Rail robberies leave LA train tracks covered in litter

Thousand of shredded boxes, packages and discarded products stolen from cargo containers piled up on the Union Pacific train tracks near downtown Los Angeles, on Monday.

Parcels from Amazon, UPS and other shipping companies lay looted along miles of train tracks. Broken appliances and children’s artwork were also seen among the broken packaging.

Cleaning efforts were underway with a dozen workers picking up the trash and loading it to a bulldozer. At least one man was detained by police after being caught on the train tracks with looted products.

According to Union Pacific senior director of public affairs Lupe Valdez, train robberies have reportedly risen by a 356 percent between October 2020 and October 2021, with 90 containers being compromised each day in the Los Angeles area.
