A group of protesters, including personalities such as British singer Roger Waters and American actress Susan Sarandon, joined a rally in support of Julian Assange in New York City on Monday.
“[I am here] because I live here. I live on this planet and they are destroying it and part of them destroying it is to incarcerate Assange,” Waters said.

“He’s suffering after these 11 years, it’s taken its toll on him. He has always symptoms of psychological torture and things like that, he’s not the same man he was when all of this began and it’s heartbreaking to see that happen to him,” Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton added.

The latest protest comes just days after a UK court ruled that the 50-year-old Australian national could be extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.

The decision overturns a previous court ruling against extradition, issued on the grounds that Assange was believed to face a higher suicide risk if incarcerated in the United States.

SOT, Roger Waters, Activist and Pink Floyd co-founder: “[I am here] because I live here. I live on this planet and they are destroying it and part of them destroying it is to incarcerate Assange. Assange is absolutely vital for the survival of this planet. That’s it, and that’s enough for me because I have children and grandchildren and I care about my brothers and sisters, and these are [UNNINTELIGIBLE] to destroy the planet and Assange is a very important part of how to stop them, so that’s why. That’s why they are locking him up.”

SOT, Susan Sarandon, Activist and actress: “The New York Times, the Washington Post had no problem publishing and commercialising and commodifying what Julian made available and we don’t hear anything from the now. And you’d think they would feel threatened for the future of what journalists are allowed to question.”

SOT, Gabriel Shipton, Julian Assange’s brother: “Julian has two weeks to lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court but what this decision showed is that we can no longer rely on the UK to stop this extradition. The prosecution of Julian needs to be dropped here in the US. The UK has no First Amendment, they have no press freedom protection like you do here in the US so we can’t rely on them to stop this prosecution.”

SOT, Gabriel Shipton, Julian Assange’s brother: “I think we try to look at the bigger picture, this is always going to go to the Supreme Court. Now it’s just up to the UK to following their own laws, hopefully they don’t break their own laws but yes very worried about it. This hanging over Julian’s head just increases the pressure on him now, we live in fear that he won’t make it through this or that he will die basically during this process.”

SOT, Gabriel Shipton, Julian Assange’s brother: “He’s suffering after these 11 years, it’s taken its toll on him. He has always symptoms of psychological torture and things like that, he’s not the same man he was when all of this began and it’s heartbreaking to see that happen to him.”
