The US has accused Russia of planning to stage a so-called ‘false-flag’ operation to potentially justify an attack on Ukraine, with White House Press Secretary Jen Paski claiming from Washington DC on Friday that Moscow operatives “trained in urban warfare and using explosives” might carry out “acts of sabotage against Russia’s own proxy forces.”

“We have information that indicates Russia has already pre-positioned a group of operatives to conduct a false flag operation in eastern Ukraine,” Psaki told a press conference. She went on to mention a reported cyber attack on Ukraine, claiming that such hacks were not uncommon in Moscow’s playbook. However, Ukraine officials have said it was too early to say who was responsible for the hack, and Psaki refused to comment on its source.

The Kremlin, reacting to earlier reports of a planned ‘false flag’ action by Russia, rejected the accusations as baseless and unfounded.
