USA: Storm Ida wreaks havoc on Queens neighbourhood

Residents assessed the damage to their homes and neighbourhood following severe flooding caused by Hurricane Ida, in Queens on Thursday.
The storm left 28 dead and 150,000 homes without power across the three states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue the first-ever flash flood emergency warning for New York City. The NWS recorded 80mm (3.15 inches) of rain in one hour in downtown NYC.
Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the state of emergency shortly before midnight, saying the city was ‘enduring a historic weather event’ with ‘record-breaking rain’ and ‘brutal flooding.’

She’s asleep, she woke up, she doesn’t realise and I said, ‘go down stairs’ and yeah she was like ‘oh this is so flooded.’ Whenever I was there, ‘cause I know I had to park pretty far away on the other side of the soccer field over here and the entire soccer field was like a lake and I saw people having to actually swim through the water so that means it was at least up to here right and then when I came home it was already down here but everything that is very heavy is all everywhere else so it was pretty crazy. See it got high enough to fill this with water.. So right. “

SOT, Queens Resident “So where I parked, so like I said the entire thing is just a big lake and there was people, not wading, but swimming through the water and they trying to carry stuff while swimming and it was not working out so I got out of my car and helped a couple of people and then they were just covered and shit, because its still raining and cold right and they were coming out, but probably I saw at least 20 people in the time that I was just before I fell asleep in my car, just coming out of this lake that formed and they were all either from here and trying to get higher or they were from there and trying to get to their house. So yeah it was… and what if some people can’t swim.”
