USA: Teenagers rescued after falling into ice-covered Missouri lake

Two teenagers were dramatically saved from under frozen Creve Coeur Lake in Missouri on Tuesday.

Maryland Heights Fire Protection District crews were practicing rescue missions at Creve Coeur Lake when two teenagers were spotted running across the ice. Within 15 seconds the pair were submerged as the ice broke. Four rescuers then ventured onto the ice and used equipment in order to bring the pair to safety.

The teenagers were about 91 meters (300 feet) from the edge of the lake. The two were taken to hospital but recorded as not seriously injured.

Missouri records extremely cold temperatures in the winter, with days that rarely go above 4.4 degrees celsius (40°F) making frozen lakes a regularity in the winter season.
