USA: Texas border bridge closed amid massive influx of migrants in Del Rio

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) authorities closed the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas on Friday.

Long lines of vehicles could be seen in front of the closed border bridge.

The closure of the US-Mexico border crossing comes after images emerged showing thousands of migrants in the area.

According to reports, there are around 8,000 migrants, most of them of Haitian origin, trying to flee the country hit by natural disasters and political instability.

Alfredo Castillo, a pastor of the Promised Land Church, shared conversations he had with a group of migrants stranded in the area:

“We were touched by a group of Haitians who were looking for a place to eat. I think they had run out of food in certain restaurants over there. And they were looking for a place to eat. We asked them why they were coming if they know there is this crisis right now, why to take the risk. They said ‘this does not compare to the crisis we are experiencing in our country.’”

CBP confirmed via its Twitter account on Saturday that the temporary restriction on non-essential travel through US land ports of entry remains in effect.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also confirmed that the temporary restriction on non-essential travel through U.S. land ports of entry remains in effect. The FAA on Thursday imposed a ban on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights over the bridge, where thousands of migrants gathered this week.

The new regulation, which was imposed ‘for safety reasons,’ according to the FAA notice, will be in effect for two weeks.
