Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for their legacy project dubbed ‘Obama Presidential centre’ in Chicago’s Jackson Park, on Tuesday.
The former presidential couple symbolically turned their shovels to mark the beginning of construction after five years of project works and delays due to gentrification concerns and federal review.
The Obama centre is set to become “a place where residents and visitors from all over the world come together and restore the promise of the people’s park”, the former president stressed in his address as he returned to the town where he had started his political career.
The former first lady added: “To me, this doesn’t so much feel like building something new. It feels like we’re helping to reveal what has always been here.”
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker attended the ceremony and tossed the ground with the Obama family.

SOT, Michelle Obama, Former First Lady: “It’s about giving a little something back to the place that we absolutely, truly love. Because to me this doesn’t so much feel like building something new. It feels like we’re helping to reveal what always been here.”

SOT, Barack Obama, Former U.S. President: “We were married here. Had our reception right down at South Shore Cultural Center. Our daughters were born here right down the street at the hospital. We bought our first home here, a few blocks away. It’s where I taught law and Michelle worked with students at the university and patients at the hospital. It’s where I first announced my campaign for public office.”
