The Vietnamese bobsled team, currently training at the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid, has its sights set on the unlikely and surprising goal of becoming Vietnam’s first representatives at the Winter Olympics.
“So rght now we’re here in New York, practicing at the Lake Placid track. It’s one of the tracks that we’ll be trying to race on to qualify for the games. In the next couple of months, we’re gonna be racing in Park City Utah, Lake Placid and potentially Europe to try and race our way into the Olympic Games,” explained Vietnamese national bobsledder Daniel Klauz.
“To try to represent Vietnam would be an absolute dream, Vietnam has never been to a Winter Olympics, ever. It would be really really cool to bring winter sport to them,” he went on to say.
Klauz explained how much of their funding has been provided by Korea’s legacy fund, put in place after holding the last Winter Olympics.
SOT, Daniel Klauz, Vietnamese national bobsledder: “So rght now we’re here in New York, practicing at the Lake Placid track. It’s one of the tracks that we’ll be trying to race on to qualify for the games. In the next couple of months, we’re gonna be racing in Park City Utah, Lake Placid and potentially Europe to try and race our way into the Olympic Games.”
SOT, Daniel Klauz, Vietnamese national bobsledder: “So, for me, bobsled and skeleton have always been some of the coolest sports around so I always wanted to try them. Then, as I became an adult, I was looking for something to do with my life, and I decided to give skeleton a go. As time moved on, I got the opportunity to bobsled. That’s just been incredible. To try to represent Vietnam would be an absolute dream, Vietnam has never been to a Winter Olympics, ever. It would be really really cool to bring winter sport to them. Korea, through their legacy fund through the last Olympic Games, have been helping to fund a lot of south-east Asian sports, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand. With their help it’s really bringing that dream closer to reality.”
SOT, Journalist: “What do you think about the reaction.”
SOT, Daniel Klauz, Vietnamese national bobsledder: “Yeah, we’ve gotten some articles, it’s mostly positive, but people really just don’t know what this sport is. We’ve got a country that’s almost never seen snow. It only snows in one place in Vietnam, which only gets about 1cm of snow, maybe. People are starting to learn and it’s been great.”
