The US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price blamed Russia for endangering the International Space Station with orbital debris from weapons testing during a press briefing in Washington DC on Monday.
“The Russian Federation recklessly conducted a destructive satellite test of a direct ascent anti-satellite missile against one of its satellites. The test has so far generated over 1,500 pieces of trackable orbital debris,” stated Price.
The debris floated close by to the International Space Station. Amid fear of collision, the crew members were forced to take cover in their dock capsules. The spokesperson confirmed that the debris was from an old Russian satellite destroyed in a weapons test.
“This test will significantly increase the risk to astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station, as well as to other human spaceflight activities. Russia’s dangerous and irresponsible behaviour jeopardises the long-term sustainability of outer space and demonstrates that Russia’s claims of opposing the weaponisation of space are disingenuous and hypocritical.”
Price also commented on the EU’s new sanctions on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko for the Polish border migrant crisis and highlighted that the US would also follow up on sanctions.
“I understand that the EU today announced a new sanctions authority that could apply to the situation in Belarus. We, too, are preparing to follow up sanctions in close coordination with the EU and other partners and allies that will continue to hold the Lukashenko regime accountable for its ongoing attacks on democracy.”
