American negotiators are in contact with Taliban representatives in Doha and on the ground in Kabul, the US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a press briefing in Washington DC on Monday.

The State Department also called for a new Afghan government that is “united, inclusive and representative – including with the full, equal and meaningful participation of women.”

The briefing was the first by the US State Department following the takeover of Afghanistan by Taliban fighters. President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country and the US has evacuated all personnel from its embassy.

The recent Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.
