World War II paratrooper veteran Tom Rice celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday in his birth town of Coronado in San Diego. Rice celebrated by parachuting his way through the sky after jumping out of a former military aircraft.

The veteran successfully completed the tandem skydive following a landing on the beach near Hotel del Coronado, where a greeting party and spectators were awaiting for further celebrations.
Rice jumped out of a WW II-era C-53D plane, known as the ‘D-Day Doll,’ which was involved in a number of missions throughout the war.

“Grab a hold of your internal organs as best as you can and and stretch your mouth as far as you can. You’ve got to keep physically fit and be prepared for anything,” stated Rice during a moment of advice on facing big jumps.

“Face all your chaotic situations, reduce them to a danger, reduce the danger to an inconvenience and keep moving forward,” Rice added.

Rice was involved in the D-Day operation in Normandy, having served with the 101st Airborne Division.

The veteran has previously made headlines in 2019, following his involvement in a jump commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day at the age of 97.

SOT, Tom Rice, World War 2 paratrooper veteran: “Grab a hold of your internal organs as best as you can and and stretch your mouth as far as you can. You’ve got to keep physically fit and be prepared for anything. Face all your chaotic situations, reduce them to a danger, reduce the danger to an inconvenience and keep moving forward. End of paragraph.”

SOT, Tom Rice, World War 2 paratrooper veteran: “It’s unbelievable what you can do from up there. I really couldn’t identify the beach until we got very low, but it was spectacular.”

SOT, Juan Arango, Parachutist: “Oh, it was very exciting. So we got to jump with Tom in Normandy a little bit more than two years ago for the 75th anniversary of D-Day, so getting the chance of jumping with him again for a hundredth birthday is pretty awesome and just land on the beach, [in] the place where he was born with all the people who wanted to see him is exciting.”

SOT, Holly Shaffner, Volunteer director of Public Relations at Honor Flight San Diego: “So we are very good friends with him and I literally had tears in my eyes watching him drop from the sky today. I mean, to celebrate what a fabulous man he is and all the things he did for America, to keep us free, it just really made me have tears today.”
