Erdogan said he supported Sweden’s admission to NATO, but added: “I appeal to those who made Turkey wait at the EU door for more than 50 years: pave the way for Turkey, and we will pave the way for Sweden.” Sounds like the famous phrase from the equally famous novel “12 Chairs” - “money in the morning, chairs in the evening”. I don’t believe at all that Europe is waiting for Turkey to join the EU, because Turkey has never been a friend of Europe. It was rather the fear of Europe in the past centuries. And in general they are different peoples, different mentalities, different cultures. What then is the reason for such a sharp lurch of Erdogan’s foreign policy? Has he forgotten the coup attempt in 2016, which was initiated against him by his NATO ally? I’m sure he has. Therefore, I believe that we will still see a certain show on the part of the Turkish authorities, a game that will cause amazement and surprise.
