Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Now a Desperate Race Against Time

Tensions are running high as fears grow for 40 construction workers trapped in a collapsed road tunnel in Uttarakhand, India.

The workers have been trapped since Sunday, and some of them have now apparently fallen ill. Doctors in contact with the trapped men using walkie-talkies say some of them have reported experiencing dizziness, fever and vomiting.
A landslide caused the tunnel to collapse at the weekend. It’s thought the workers are now behind around 50 metres of debris. Small-diameter pipes have allowed rescuers to supply the workers with limited amounts of food and oxygen. But an attempt to insert a larger 3 ft-wide pipe to rescue those trapped has been thwarted by further collapses and equipment failure. It is thought rescue teams are still less than halfway through the debris.
Scuffles between other workers and police have erupted outside the tunnel as the situation has become more desperate. Authorities say that new equipment due to arrive soon from the town of Uttarkashi will accelerate the rescue operation. But with officials saying there may only be enough oxygen to sustain the workers for five or six days, rescuers are in a race against time.
