Putin’s Nuclear Blackmail: Why has Russia abandoned the START treaty?
Russia is suspending its participation in the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START, START-III). This was announced on Tuesday, February 21, by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the announcement of the message to the Federal Assembly. The President stressed that Russia is not withdrawing from the treaty, namely, it is suspending its participation. For further cooperation within the framework of the treaty, Putin continued, Moscow needs to understand how exactly NATO’s total nuclear arsenal will be taken into account.
START, or START III, is a treaty between Russia and the United States that came into force in 2010. Under its terms, countries must reduce their nuclear arsenals to 700 intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missiles on submarines and heavy bombers, 1,550 warheads and 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers.
