Venezuela’s ruling Socialist Party (PSUV) held primaries to choose candidates for the November elections for governors and mayors in Caracas on Sunday.

President Nicolas Maduro and local residents cast their votes in the primaries, which will determine who will hold the 23 state and 335 municipal government positions.

Venezuela’s government and the opposition are preparing to enter into a negotiation process set to start later this month in Mexico.

“We have the full support of Mexico for these peace talks with the Guadosista opposition. Let us hope that the date is set, the exact place is indicated, of this peace dialogue,” confirmed Maduro in a press conference.

A coalition of major opposition parties is willing to participate in November’s elections, after boycotting the 2018 and 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is backed by the US, has not said whether opposition candidates should take part.

“We do not have any communication with the United States government. That’s the truth. Those who have communication with the government of the United States is the Guaidosista opposition that belongs to them. They are subordinate to and obey the mandates and designs of the United States government and elites,” added Maduro.
