Kensington Palace released this image of Princess Catherine and her three children for Mother’s Day.

It was hoped that the sweet picture of Kate with George, Charlotte and Louis would end online speculation about the princess’ health and whereabouts.

But shortly after its release, several major news organisations withdrew the picture, saying it had been digitally manipulated.

The Associated Press was the first agency to pull the image as it “did not meet” the agency’s photo standards, noting an “inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand”.

Kensington Palace has so far not responded to the claims.

Although there is no doubt the original photo is genuine, speculation about whether the image was altered for publication has been rampant on social media.

The photo was published with a message from the princess thanking the public for its support while marking Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom.

It was the first to be officially released by Kensington Palace since Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January.
