We do! Dozens of couples marry in first mass Kashmiri wedding since pandemic

In Sirinagar’s first mass wedding since the pandemic began, more than 100 couples tied the knot on Sunday in a cooperative initiative to help those who cannot afford their own ceremonies.
The ceremony began with the traditionally dressed brides from different areas of the valley gathering with the traditionally dressed grooms inside various tents where the marriages were officiated.

“During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we as an organisation were not able to conduct such mass marriages because of restrictions and other related things. It’s the first time since the pandemic we have organised a mass marriage and we believe it will benefit the less privileged families,” stated Jaffri council chairman Musadiq Hussain Manhas.

“I am very poor and there was no support and source from my parents, and the organization who is organizing our wedding today helped us in all means and if without them my wedding was impossible,” stated one of the grooms Zaqir Ali.

SOT, Zaitoona, Bride (Urdu): “My name is Zaitoona and I am from north Kashmir, today is my wedding day and I am very excited and happy too. I am happy the way I am getting married, we appreciate such platforms where poor boys and girls like me are helped until we reach our wedding day. We hope and wish such events should take place in the near future as well and it is very helpful for us.”

SOT, Parmeena Ali, Bride (Kashmiri): “We were getting over age and our males were also crossing the age limit for marriage, because of COVID-19 lockdowns we couldn’t think about our marriage. Also the economy here went down and our parents were not in a position to think about our marriage on time. And now we are here for our marriage and we are happy and such functions helped us a lot.”

SOT, Musadiq Hussain Manhas, Jaffri Council chairman (Urdu): “During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we as an organisation were not able to conduct such mass marriages because of restrictions and other related things. It|s the first time since the pandemic that we have organised a mass marriage like this and we believe it will benefit the less privileged families. Our boys and girls are crossing their age limits, because of economic losses during the pandemic and because of the dowry system and in the coming future we will erase the dowry system in our societies by organising such mass marriages.”

In today’s world there are so many traditions and customs vis-a-vis our marriage system is concerned and being a son of a poor man I am thankful to the organisers for all their support.”
